The English Heritage blue plaque scheme has commemorated notable people in London since 1866 and is the oldest scheme of its kind in the world. A plaque marks a building where someone lived or worked. This map covers 935 English Heritage blue plaques across London, from Westminster and Chelsea to Hampstead, Brixton and Bow.
Plaques mark the homes and workplaces of writers, artists, scientists, performers, musicians, architects, campaigners and sportspeople — among them Freddie Mercury, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Charles Darwin, Florence Nightingale, Karl Marx, Oscar Wilde, Alan Turing, Charles Dickens, Virginia Woolf, Ada Lovelace, Mary Seacole and Agatha Christie. Every plaque is sorted into a category — Writers & Literature, Art & Design, Science & Technology, Film & Theatre, Music, Politics & Society, Architecture and Sport — so you can explore London by the kind of story you like.
